Every National Stock Number starts with a four-digit Federal Supply Class. The first two digits are the Federal Supply Group (15 is aerospace craft and structural components, 28 is engines and turbines); the four together are the class (1560 airframe structural components, 2840 gas turbine engine components). 676 classes in 80 groups are listed below; 310 of them have DLA solicitations open today, 11,640 in all.

How the classification is used
The Federal Supply Classification is maintained by the Defense Logistics Agency and shared across NATO. It files every item of supply in one class, so a solicitation, an award and a catalog record can all be sorted the same way. DLA buyers are organized by supply chain along these lines, small-business set-asides are decided by NAICS code rather than by class, and the class is the first thing a seller uses to tell which solicitations are worth reading.
On this site the class is one of the ways in: a class hub for each class with activity, the buys that are due by class, and the class filter on /start for a shop that wants to see what it could quote today.
