What a CAGE code is

The Commercial and Government Entity code is a five-character identifier for one legal entity at one address: a company, a division, a plant, or a government activity. The Defense Logistics Agency assigns it, and it follows the entity through every federal record: the catalog lists a part's manufacturer by CAGE, a solicitation names its approved sources by CAGE, and an award is filed against the winner's CAGE. Outside the United States the equivalent is an NCAGE, assigned by the country's NATO codification bureau, and it works in the same records.

A code is issued when a business registers on SAM.gov. The registration is free and so is the code; no company needs to pay a service for either. Registration has to be renewed every year, which is why a code can be on file but not active.

Registry

Name, address and SAM registration status as the government publishes them.

Awards

What DLA and other agencies awarded the company, by stock number, quantity and price, with the dates.

Approved for

The stock numbers the government lists the company as an approved source for, and which of those are open for quotes right now.

The scorecard

Over twelve months, what DLA bought on those stock numbers, how much the company won, and how much went to other suppliers.

FAA

PMA holdings on file with the FAA, where the names match.

Claim

A company can claim its own page free, add its inventory, and get an email the morning one of its numbers is solicited or bought.
